Not directly engaging with an art work, whereby I mean not just reading the statement, looking at the work and deciding its good or bad, is a fundamental problem with art students. If we do not ENGAGE: critcally analyze every single tiny detail of what an artist is/ isn’t showing us then we are wasting our pathetic little ignorance on something they have created. Art is innovation. If an artist is not striving for innovation in their practice and field and that is recognised by critique then so be it and the art work has failed. Engagement is absolutely cardinal. Failing to do this is a really probing worriment
